Cannabis Oil: How Much Should I Take?

Cannabis-Oil-How-Much-Should-I-Take

Cannabis oil is one of the most popular, smoke free options for consuming cannabis.

Not only is it a much safer way to consume cannabis, it can be a lot more useful, fun and exhilarating as well.

However, cannabis oil comes with a lot of questions, like:

  • How do you use it?
  • How much should you take?
  • How long does it take for the effects to set in?

The good news is that we are here to answer all of these.

But before we do that, let’s take a look at some background.

What is cannabis oil?

Cannabis oil is just what it sounds like, oil which has been made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis flowers. It can contain

  • CBD or Cannabidiol, a non psychoactive, medicinal compound found in different cannabis strains
  • THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is commonly known for its psychoactive effects
  • Other minor compounds such as CBN etc
  • Terpenes and aromatic compounds
  • Carrier oils like olive or sunflower oil

In fact, since it contains extracted cannabinoids like CBD and THC, cannabis oil is often more potent and useful medicinally. This is probably why it is by far the most demanded concentrated cannabis product out there, and is widely available all over Canada.

However, there are many different types of cannabis oils out there. Which is why it is best to do your research beforehand, and keep in mind what you want to use the oil for.

For example, if you are a recreational user, you might like a high THC oil, whereas medicinal users might be looking for CBD based products.

This brings us to the next question, how do you use cannabis oil?

How do you use cannabis oil?

Just like other cannabis products, there are numerous ways in which you can use cannabis oil.

You can take it directly and use a dropper to drop a couple drops under your tongue, which allows the cannabinoids to infuse directly into your bloodstream.

On the other hand, many users prefer infusing their cannabis oil into edibles (cookies, brownies, tacos) and beverages (juices and even beers). However, this is more difficult than it sounds, since overheating the oil can quickly result in it losing its potency. Lastly, many producers also infuse cannabis oils into creams and moisturizers to be applied onto the skin.

But how much cannabis oil should I take?

Once again, there really is no recommended dosage. Instead, different dosages will affect people differently, depending on their age, sex, experience etc. So you see, it all depends on you and what dosage suits you. However, if you are totally new to cannabis, nearly all experts recommend that you begin with a low dose, and gradually increase as the need arises.

But don’t worry, for it is extremely easy to set doses and keep track of your intake with cannabis oil. All producers are legally required to clearly label how much THC and CBD their oil contains. Additionally, nearly all brands come with a dosing syringe or a dropper, helping you keep track of your intake carefully.

How long will it take to feel an effect?

Once again, there is no definitive answer to this question. Instead, it depends on a whole lot of things. To begin with, the method of consumption plays a very important role.

If you are using a dropper, then the effects should set in within 15 to 30 minutes since they are being directly infused into your bloodstream.

However, if you are ingesting a cannabis oil infused edible, it can take anywhere between half an hour to four hours for the effects to set in, depending on your metabolism, how much food already is in your stomach, and also the dosage.
